“The Amazing Spider-Man” Trailer
Well, I’ve switched from one focusing on one comic book movie to another. As some of you know, this trailer was leaked a few days ago, before being taken down more swiftly than Warner Bros. treated the “The Dark Knight Rises” bootleg. However, Columbia chose to not let it’s fans wait long for the real thing. Here is the first “Spider-Man” trailer, in all of it’s glory.
Everything looks great, withholding the ridiculously jarring and fake-looking first person action shot. I think that Andrew Garfield will do a great job as Peter Parker and the look of the film is fantastic, credit to director Marc Webb. Yet, watching this, I find myself asking, more than ever before, exactly what was the point in rebooting this, other than adding another billion dollars to the bank account. Stylistically and thematically, the film might be a little different and perhaps even a little better. Yet, neither of those two categories have changed enough to make this reinvention valid.
I suppose this debate will continue once we see a little more footage. Check out the trailer, for yourselves, below.
Michael Shannon to Play Villain in “Superman”
Once again, it’s pretty weird that I’m trying to be as on the ball as this on “Man of Steel” production updates, given that I’ve never been a huge fan of the comics or the character. I remember Amy Adams getting cast as Lois Lane and rushing to announce it, all the while, I’m asking myself why I care. Who knows? Maybe I’ve just completely given up on any potential aspiring from “The Dark Knight Rises,” what with its recent absurd string of press releases. I may end up eating those words but, come on. Pittsburgh as Gotham City? Yeah, good luck with that.
And now the news that they’re bringing back Ra’s Al Ghul as a villain in this film. He was one of the only things that heavily annoyed me in “Batman Begins” and now they’re bringing him back for another go-around? At least they picked a decent actor in Chris Pence, who did a hell of a job as the man behind the sunglasses (Armie Hammer’s body double) in “The Social Network.”
Anyway, I’ve gone off on a tangent. As I said, I have no overwhelming interest in the new “Super-Man” film, however, this recent news has me quite tickled. Michael Shannon, the audacious and exciting young actor from “Bug” “The Woodsman” and “Revolutionary Road” (which he received and Oscar nomination for), has been cast to play the villainous General Zod in Zack Snyder’s reboot. As I said, I know nothing about the comics. However, a segment of the report by Mike Fleming at Deadline.com shines some light on the character:
Snyder stated, “Zod is not only one of Superman’s most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don’t. Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role.”
Not sure how much this raises my expectations for the film. However, I’ll say that if there were a reason to go see it now, it would be for this fine actor.
BREAKING NEWS: Amy Adams is Lois Lane in “Superman” Reboot
I can’t say that the new “Superman” franchise is something that I’m looking forward to with beaming eyes. Even with Christopher Nolan’s attachment, Zack Snyder at the helm of anything makes me kind of want to purge a little. However, this seems like a pretty cool casting choice. Adams is a phenomenal actress, and extremely attractive, and I like it when Hollywood casts meaty roles with actresses who hold both of those qualities rather than just the latter.
Here’s an excerpt from the LA Times article:
The 36-year-old star got the news on Sunday from director Zack Snyder, who phoned her from Paris, where he was promoting his just-opened film, “Sucker Punch.” There had been a crush of Hollywood interest in the lead female role in the Warner Bros. project but Snyder said that after meeting with Adams, she was the clear choice to take on a character that dates back to 1938 and has long represented the strong, professional woman who can hold her own against any man – even if he can leap tall buildings in a single bound.
It’s kind of strange that of the two leading lady roles available for superhero movies floating around, Adams gets the part of the woman who isn’t famous for her blazing red hair as opposed to the one who is. Who knows? Since Mary Jane supposedly will not even be a part of “The Amazing Spider-Man,” (which I still can’t believe), Adams will have to dye down that mop settle for being in the more boring of the two comic book films. I am, however, looking forward to having at least some of “Man of Steel” being shot here in the Chicago area ever since Christopher Nolan turned his back on the second city with the only superhero movie that really matters…
NEW Spider-Man Photo
There’s been a release of the first photo from Marc Webb’s “Spider-Man” reboot starring Andrew Garfield. Hate to say it, but despite it’s fantastic director (who recently garnered acclaim for “500 Days of Summer”) and wonderful lead actor (who will soon be getting an Oscar nomination for “The Social Network”), I have never been excited about this film in the least.
Gotta tell you what. This picture looks dope. From the looks of it, this film might be getting a type of “Dark Knight” type of makeover, and I’m always all for that. If something can be made darker, that’s automatically another way of making it better in my book. Bring it on.
