Top Ten Lists from The New Yorker

Not exactly earth-shattering news, but I’d like to get everybody’s Top Tens on the record. Tis the season.

But, if anyone want’s to inform Anthony Lane that “A Prophet” is a 2009 release, I’d appreciate it. And damn it, is it too much to ask for that people rank their top tens. I mean, that’s the fun of being a critic, letting people know that you like this movie more than this one. I don’t know. Not bad choices though, or at least more original than Peter Travers.

David Denby
“Company Men”
“Exit Through the Gift Shop”
“The Fighter”
“The Ghost Writer”
“Inside Job”
“Please Give”
“Restrepo”
“The Social Network”
“Toy Story 3”
“Winter’s Bone”

Anthony Lane
“Dogtooth”
“The Father of My Children”
“I Am Love”
“Life During Wartime”
“Mother”
“A Prophet”
“The Social Network”
“Sweetgrass”
“Toy Story 3”
“Winter’s Bone”

As we can see between these two lists, and between Travers’ as well, for that matter, is a consensus forming with “The Social Network,” “Toy Story 3” and “Winter’s Bone.” I think we can expect to see a lot more of that through the rest of the year.

Oh, and it’s worth pointing out that while these technically aren’t ranked, Denby did apparently state that “The Social Network” was the best film of the year. Huzzah.
